T.S. Eliot
Before: Who is that man? What is going on in Rhapsody on a Windy Night; Portrait of a Lady and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock? What is symbolism and what the heck is so special about THAT MAN?!
After: The man in the photo is Thomas Stearns Eliot, commonly referred to as T.S. Eliot.
Eliot was born on September the 26th 1888 in America (Missouri) and died on the 4th of January 1965 in London (England).
He is one of the most influential writers of the 20th century and led the ‘modernist movement’ — his poetry depicted dystopic perceptions of the ever-changing world. Eliot has several notable works (the most famous being The Waste Land) and has been studied academically for years, he was such a skilled writer that he is still respected by critics and playwrights to the same extent as he was for his poetry.
His style was developed by studying philosophers at Harvard and Jules La Forgue in France. Throughout his life he experienced a continuous relocation both physically and mentally (growing and developing his ideas and opinions). His education was one he continued to expand and return to, as he planned to go back to Harvard but was unable to because of WW1.
It was WW1 that began Eliot’s pessimistic; derelict and dystopic style of writing with The Waste Land Poem.
